Would we do that in the real world?

The digital world has brought magic to our doorsteps.

When JK Rowling introduced apparition in the Harry Potter books, we were amazed to see the ability of wizards to instantly go from one place to another.

But now we can do that too. We can switch from an office meeting to a conversation with a group of friends to an amusement park in our pocket in an instant and back.

It seems magical, but does it help us in doing the work that we show up to do? Would we have switched back and forth if there was a cost to switching like in the real world? Would we leave our office in the middle of the day to go to the amusement park and back 10 times a day? Would we leave our friends in the middle of a conversation and go to our office just to see if we got a mail through the post and try to write and reply instantly?

Yes, technology has made context-switching instant but just because we can doesn't mean we should. Instead, we can create a small break similar to a physical commute before we switch contexts and we can focus on getting the thing done while we are here before shifting context and going to the amusement park in our pocket.
