When to quit? (Part 1)
Seth Godin talks about quitting in his book The Dip. He talks about three curves: the dip, the cul-de-sac, the cliff.
Let’s talk about the dip today.
Being a professional is about going through the dip. When you get started, there will be some results that can be seen with some effort. You would be excited. Other people around you would be excited.
But soon enough, this excitement will go away. Now, for a long time, you will keep on making efforts, but the results will keep going down each day. Less applause, less excitement, less everything. This is where people quit. This is where they should not. If you quit in the dip, all the effort that you have put in so far is for nothing.
So, the best strategy before embarking on a project with a dip is to see if we have the resources and the commitment to reach the other side. It doesn’t make sense to swim half-way across the river and then decide and it was better on the other side only and turn around.
