Well before the deadline.

The good thing about deadlines is that they ensure that the work gets done, especially when another person is involved.

The bad thing is that we get used to doing the work only in time to meet the deadline. We become habitual of starting the work only when the deadline is impending.

The urgency of the impending deadline can lead to shipping. However, without slack, we are more likely to deliver below-par work when we are so close to the deadline.

Instead, the professional allows for slack and finishes his work much before the deadline. He knows that, sooner or later, playing too close to the deadline is going to affect either the quality of his work or his consistency.
