Who do you imitate?
Choose a group where your desired behaviour is the normal behaviour.
- James Clear, Atomic Habits
We are social creatures and have a tendency to imitate those we surround ourselves with. This is genetically ingrained and extremely powerful. And we can use this to design and build the life we desire.
Want to be a successful entrepreneur? Surround yourself with other successful entrepreneurs. If you can't find someone in real life, spend time listening to and reading them through books and podcasts.
Want to work out more? Start hanging out with people who do that regularly. The more you spend time with them, the more you will start choosing healthier alternatives.
James Clear says in his book that we imitate the behaviours of three kinds of people: the ones who are close, the many, and the powerful. We can choose people in all three categories to make it easier to ingrain our desirable habits.
Seth Godin's words, "People like us do things like these", perfectly correlate here. If we choose to spend time with the people like us, it will become easier to do the things like these.
