Boss as a service?
We hate managers until we become one ourselves. And then we start hating both the managers and the ones being managed.
We rarely think of our managers or our bosses as providing us any service.
They breathe down our necks to drain every ounce of time and energy out of us to make us do work that we don’t really feel like doing.
Many times, we feel that we are much more productive without them.
But, is there a service that the boss provides?
And if yes, how can that be done in a better way?
First of all, it depends on what you are working on and who benefits from that work. And do you really care about that person. And are you getting something tangible back in return.
I think this is a hygiene factor. Without this, this discussion is useless. This is what all of us should strive to find out. What value do we want to create and for whom.
But, it does not stop at that. Because even if you stumble upon this, getting the work done is a real pain. And Resistance is the worst when we are doing this kind of work.
We start suffering from chronic procrastination and rationalisation which soon turn into chronic depression. No wonder, people go back to their mean bosses or find a new one.
But, if you can hire a boss who can force you to do the work that only you can do, that you have to do, then that is a service worth paying for.
Having a human keeping you accountable is a luxury. You need to find the right one for the right work.
